A Eulogy

I'm afraid my joyous singing was a little premature... we are now down to seven members in our household.

Sebastian had been buried for so long that nearly forgot him and I neglected him a little too much. It may have been due to some other cause, since he left his shell, and I suspect that he'd been having issues for a while. But I let his water dry up and that was probably the straw that broke the camel's back.

I feel bad :(

But for the record to any hermit crab people... I had lovely deep sand for him, cuttlefish bone, and a mini heating pad to keep the tank warm... lack of water wouldn't have been good for the humidity, but for the most part I was a dutiful owner :(

Crowded

On the Fourth Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me,
Three lovely ladies
Two waring kitties
Two shy birdies
And a hermit crab in fun shell!

Sexiness Part 2

When I was in Idaho this past summer, on a river rafting trip, I was lucky enough to see this guy, literally, struting his stuff! This is a blue grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) he was showing off his sexy eyebrows and puffed red airsacs to this demure little lady. Note that this smart lady is in a patch of poison ivy. And, that she has just stopped eating it to make sure I don't get too close!

Incidentally, the lady was showing some cool gular fluttering. This, I learned in Avian Biology, is because birds can't sweat. So, because it was bloody hot in Idaho, the lady was fluttering the skin on her throat to cool down. I'll try to remember to post the video I have of her doing just that.

For many types of grouse, this display would be performed by the male for several females on a lek. A lek is a place where the males get together to strut their stuff. We only saw one male, but the evening before this amourous display, we saw at least two ladies around the campsites. I'm not sure if the blue grouse leks, but my bird book says that sometimes these displays are performed in trees! The male also sometimes 'hoots'.

I haven't read any studies on these birds, but I'd guess that the hoot is a measure of size. With most animals, their body size is the limiting factor when it comes to making deep sounds. This guy's hoot was pretty deep and booming. He might be saying "Listen to me! I'm so big and sexy" ;)

Sexiness

I see that sexiness has been alluded to in the last few posts, so I thought, "Let's start a trend!"

'Sexiness' is sometimes hard to tell apart from 'toughness'. For example, these guys here are Red-winged Black birds (Agelaius phoeniceus, to be exact). At the moment they're calling and showing off they're red shoulders. In this case, the shoulders definitely are telling other males to stay away, but they may also be telling ladies "Here I am, and I'm sooooo sexy!" These aren't always different. However, it could also be that the shoulders talk to the guys and the calling talks to the ladies.

Boring Classes

Hmmm, apparently I can send blogs by email... and I can email with my phone... ah ha! Boring classes beware, Steffi can blog away!

Getting Crabby

Here we have a lovely Ghost crab as seen on the beaches of Virginia on a Red Knot banding expidition.

Meet Sebastian, hermit crab extrodinare. Here he's trying out the nice shell I got for him in Florida... Actually he's tried it out before, but I don't think he's quite satisfied with either shell... he keeps switching. Well, I'll look again this year...
I haven't seen Sebastian in quite a while, I think he's moulting... I hope he's moulting!

And finally we have fiddler crabs! See this manly male! The bright white claw is a signal to lovely ladies that a studly male is nearby. It's also likely a signal to males, since I think fiddler crabs tend to have male-male demonstrations. Some even make little castles for the ladies, if my memory serves me right!

Siskins

Siskins, so cute, so complicated. Ever wanted to know what a sexy siskin looks like? Well now I know... this guy's got a damn sexy yellow wing stripe.

For those with too much time on their hands...
